Breast Cancer Rehabilitation and Lymphedema Management
A major part of care following breast surgery will focus on returning to activity and fitness as soon as possible. Knowing what to expect will make you a more active participant in the process.

Eastern Rehabilitation Network, in collaboration with The Partnership for Breast Care, manages the rehabilitative phase of breast surgery at Hartford Hospital. ERN's physical therapists and occupational therapists, with specialized training in breast surgery rehabilitation, work with patients and their healthcare team to determine the appropriate rehabilitation goals. Early detection and treatment of lymphedema (swelling) is also addressed. The program is conducted in phases and patients may enter it at any point during their care with a physician's prescription.

Pregnancy and Postpartum
ERN offers physical therapy and back care during pregnancy and postpartum as part of our women's health initiative. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists reports that back pain is one of the most common discomforts of pregnancy, and the North American Spine Society puts the incidence at 50%. ERN's exercise program and instructional video give pregnant women the tools to prevent or minimize back pain and other musculoskeletal conditions during and after pregnancy.  Topics include:
   ·   body changes that occur during pregnancy
   ·   proper posture
   ·   proper body mechanics
   ·   activities of daily living
   ·   special clothing and supports
   ·   exercise

Osteoporosis
After a complete history and physical evaluation, your physical therapist will set up an individualized program which will feature posture and body mechanics, bone building and weight bearing exercises, pain relief and discuss home safety and good health habits. The goal of this program is to prevent fracture!
