Safe Steps

There are many reasons a person may experience balance problems and be at risk for falls. Falls can be a serious medical problem, especially for the elderly. ERN's Safe Steps program helps reduce the risk of falls. The first phase of the balance training program is an assessment of the factors affecting balance, such as changes in sensation, movement or strength, pain, foot problems, or inner ear problems (see vestibular rehabilitation below). Patients then participate in a series of standing and walking exercises designed to improve balance, walking, standing/getting up and coordination.

Those who may benefit from the Safe Steps program are people who:   

  • have had a previous fall

  • have difficulty walking
  • use 4 or more medications per day
  • have dizziness when standing
  • have foot or footwear problems such as pain or deformities
  • have to look at their feet to know where you the feet are when walking
  • have difficulty getting out of a chair
  • are unable to get up from the floor or toilet
  • are not able to stand on one leg for five seconds

 

Vestibular Rehabilitation

Millions of Americans have experienced dizziness or balance problems which can cause falls and serious injuries. The majority of these problems are caused by problems in the inner ear. You may benefit from referral to our program if you are experiencing any of the following:

·       balance problems

·      dizziness

·      disorientation

·      lightheadedness

·      blurred vision

·      nausea

·      tinnitus or ringing in the ear

After an assessment, patients participate in a program of treatment and exercise designed to decrease dizziness and improve balance and coordination. Vestibular rehabilitation is offered in East Hartford, Granby, Hartford, Meriden, West Hartford (Bishops Corner and South Main Street) and Wethersfield.
